Biography
Jessie has been making
jewelry since childhood. All four
of her grandparents made jewelry before her, so it was only natural for her
to
pick it up and love it. She collected antique jewelry and vintage silver
coins, the coins having been a gift from her paternal grandparents,
and studied silversmithing at the Woodstock Guild in Woodstock, NY. While
obtaining a BA in Psychology at Vanderbilt University,
Jessie also studied music and art. This line is the coming together of
her skills and inspirations.
To make one of these pieces,
the face is sanded off on one side of a coin (except for those pieces with the
coin image on both sides).
Then using traditional hammering and forging techniques, the shape is formed,
the designs are implanted, and the piece is domed
with a block and punches. Due to the substantial weight of the coins, there
is quite a bit of labor involved. The piece is polished by hand
and cast, using the lost wax method. The pieces are immersed in a blackening
solution and polished, connected to other pieces and
polished once again by hand. The finished piece of jewelry is cleaned and ready
to be worn.
